The Limited Louis Vuitton Fabrizio Plessi Epi Bag

The Limited Louis Vuitton Fabrizio Plessi Epi Bag

post written by Bag Bliss blogger: Jennifer

The Limited Louis Vuitton Fabrizio Plessi Epi Bag
Earlier this month Louis Vuitton opened up their new largest flapship store over in Hong Kong. For the new store, artist Fabrizio Plessi (a pioneer in video art in Europe), decorated Hong Kong’s new store with huge LED screens that feature molten gold cascading along side golden fixtures & walls. That’s not all for Fabrizio Plessi. The artist even collaborated with LV to create the Plessi digital bag (pictured above). Done in black epi leather, the bag has an LCD screen showing images of the same molten gold image through a cutout LV logo.

This bag is obviously a collectors item, reserved for only the rich and famous. This purse retails for (get ready,) a staggering $50,000 (us).

If your average purse budget can’t afford this limited edition style, don’t get your hopes up, Louis Vuitton has the almost identical Sac Plat tote in black Epi for only $1,290 over @ eluxury

Wednesday, April 16, Fool’s Gold & Dim Mak present the Screaming Bloody Murder Tour with A-Trak, Sinden, Steve Aoki, Sammy Bannanas and Kid Cudi. A-Trak (aka Alain Macklovitch) got his start in the world of turntablism at the ripe young age of 13 when he bought a pair of turntables and a mixer with money from his Bar Mitzvah. At the age of 15 this still-underage DJ from Montreal, Canada won the DMC's World DJ Championship in 1997, the youngest recipient to ever win this award. By the time he legally became an adult not only had he won all three major DJ championships (ITF, DMC, and Vestax World Extravaganza) but had also performed at clubs and music festivals around the world, including stints in Australia, Japan, South Africa, and Norway. After winning a few more DJ championships in 2000 A-Trak decided to retire from the turntable-battling scene and focus more on his on musical projects, including his label Audio Research that he ran with his brother (Dave One from synth-pop duo Chromeo). Throughout the next four years A-Trak worked on a variety of projects with underground hip-hop groups such as Non-Phixion and Stones Throw Records label head Peanut Butter Wolf.

In May of 2004 A-Trak was spotted performing at a record store in London by Chicago’s own Kanye West, who pulled him on board for his North American tour and eventually made him his permanent touring DJ. As of late, A-Trak is working on developing his new label, Fool's Gold, which is co-run by DJ Nick Catchdubs and has released tracks by such artists as Kid Sister, A-Trak himself, and Sammy Bananas. This tour features other Fool’s Gold and Dim Mak artists and epitomizes the philosophy behind the label – bringing together friends to have fun and work on music. In 2007 he released his mixtape Dirty South Dance--a series of mash-ups of dirty south hip-hop anthems with underground electro-house tracks--to much critical acclaim despite its limited pressing. A-Trak has recently been focusing on a remix project that will include remixes of Bonde do Role, Architecture in Helsinki, Kanye West, Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism, and Boys Noize among others. April 16, this multi-talented artist performs live on the Metro stage. Tickets are $15. The show is 18 & over and starts at 8pm.

Judith Supine's Dirt Mansion

via Wooster: Favorite Show Of 2008: Judith Supine's "DIRT MANSION" at English Kills Gallery

supdirt.jpg
If you're in the New York area, we can't recommend highly enough that you check out Judith Supine's first New York solo exhibition, "Dirt Mansion" which opens tonight at the English Kills Gallery in Brooklyn.
We went to the preview reception last night and were absolutely blown away. It's by far our favorite show this year.
Taking a page from Faile and Banksy, rather than stage the show at an established gallery, Judith has taken over a warehouse deep in the heart of Bushwick and transformed it into a full 360 immersive experience.
A mixture of large scale works and 3D sculpture, the show is a collection of what we think is Judith Supine's best work to date.

Dan Tague’s prints of folded cash first look like crumpled up money, but when the viewer takes a moment to read the message created by carefully folding the bill just so, all is revealed. Via Notcot.

Richard Kern's "Looker"

Richard Kern is a post-modernist punk photographer who has worked in New York city rock music and “No Wave” art circles since the 1970s. In Looker, through a series of carefully constructed vignettes, Kern’s models proceed through their daily private lives, seemingly unaware of the camera. Or are they wittingly playing into the obvious cinematic intrigue?
The balance of control present in each frame is a powerful and sensual statement. Looker is thought-provoking in its gentle nature, pastoral tones, and caring reflection of private innocence—but it is also freshly and stunningly erotic, silently exuberant in its portrayal of intimacy and abandon. Richard Kern’s photographs are a peek into a world of mystery and eroticism.
This book just dropped last week and Amazon is already out of stock. Im sure Barnes & Noble or Borders carry it as well.

Arrivederla, Valentino - Valentino's Retirement from Fashion Design

Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti at Valentino headquarters in Paris.

Arrivederla, Valentino

April 2008
W Magazine

So what does a Roman couture legend who has worked day in, day out sketching beautiful dresses for almost half a century do the day after his retirement show?

“Certainly I am not the sort of person to be sitting all day long watching television,” Valentino says, pursing his lips extra tightly.

An iris-detailed spring couture evening look.

Instead, the morning after an army of models in red gowns streamed down the runway in his farewell show, held in a cathedral-like tent at the Musée Rodin, the designer was strolling into the soaring, neo-Renaissance splendor of the Salon des Arcades at Paris’s City Hall. Karl Lagerfeld was at his side, and after he received a medal of the city from a fawning Mayor Bertrand Delanoë, who addressed him affectionately as “cher maestro,” Valentino quoted a song made famous by Josephine Baker.

“I have two loves, my country and Paris,” Valentino said in Italian-accented French as a thunderstorm of flashbulbs erupted before him.

A page of fashion history definitely turned when Valentino became only the second, after Yves Saint Laurent, of a batch of seventy-something design greats—Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani and Oscar de la Renta are among the others—to hang up his seasoned scissors. If it seemed an occasion that called for emotions of the moist variety, Valentino and his longtime business partner and alter ego, Giancarlo Giammetti, would have none of it. continue reading

Adel Abdessemed Cancellation a Rare Case of Artists Advocating for Censorship

Show's Cancellation a Rare Case of Artists Advocating for Censorship
By Kenneth Baker,
San Francisco Chronicle

On March 20, the San Francisco Art Institute opened an exhibition by Algerian-born Paris artist Adel Abdessemed. By the following Wednesday, the Art Institute announced that it had closed the exhibition until the controversy it provoked could be aired at a public discussion to take place Monday at noon. Over the weekend, the Art Institute canceled the panel discussion and the exhibition altogether. The reason: unnumbered threats of violence from animal rights activists and possibly from others. Menacing e-mails and phone messages had even streamed into Abdessemed's New York gallery, David Zwirner, unnerving its employees. A fellow artist represented by Zwirner, videomaker Diana Thater, circulated online one of the more reasoned statements of indignation over the SFAI show. Click here to continue reading...

Art World: Is street art losing its 'outsider' edge?

Art World: Is street art losing its 'outsider' edge?
By Arifa Akbar

Tate Modern today announced it has commissioned a series of giant works of "street art" to be painted on a river-facing wall for the summer season.

So street art is moving indoors. Not literally, of course, but the genre known as "outsider" art often labelled as "graffiti" and regarded as a form of vandalism, is now being celebrated by one of the nation's biggest art institutions.

Morons This news comes as Sotheby's in London announces the sale of a screenprint by Banksy, Britain's most famous guerrilla artist. Banky is said to have created the work, Morons (pictured), in response to hearing that his work, debuting at the auction house last year, had been snapped up by buyers desperate to hang some genuine "urban art" on their drawing room walls.

So a screenprint poking fun at the art establishment is sold by the establishment. In fact, the establishment is now in on the joke. Does this mean urban art is losing its subversive edge? And is it even street art - accessible and (often) transient work created for the ordinary public - if it is connected to a gallery or established institution?

The artists involved in the Tate project are JR from France, renowned for putting photos of people from deprived areas of Paris on to walls in the city's affluent districts, Blu from Bologna, Sixeart from Barcelona, the Brazilian twin brothers, Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo, and the New York collective Faile. The murals will decorate the building for three months from 23 May - painted on protective coating so they can be removed without causing damage.

Meanwhile, a new exhibition jointly organised by "o contemporary" gallery is hoping to illustrate the "vibrant spirit" of Brazilian street art at the Brazilian Embassy in London next week.

Of course none of this is new. Jean-Michel Basquiat started off daubing walls with his artwork on slum buildings of Manhattan in the 1970s, but by the end of his short life in 1988, his paintings were commanding high prices in New York's biggest galleries. Banksy's graduation from a guerrilla artist painting by night in Bristol to the toast of Sotheby's, is just the latest example of how the art elite occasionally adopts figures formerly regarded as obnoxious graffiti artists.

The question that some young artists may now be asking is, if street art is entering into the mainstream with urban artists increasingly becoming establishment figures, where do the real rebels go to rage against the machine?

Good old Charles Manson of the Tate and LaBianca murders has done the same thing. His recent album, "One Mind" is licensed in a way that allows anyone to share it with others, remix it and use it for non-commercial uses. The exact legal details are here.

Art Flourishes in Dubai's Desert

Art Flourishes in Dubai's Desert

(Moscow Times, March 21)
Art Dubai, the Middle East's biggest art fair, recently drew crowds and collectors alike, with investors collectively paying more than $15 million for contemporary works by artists such as Andy Warhol and Julian Opie. More adventurous patrons, meanwhile, sought out works by relative newcomers, including Iran's Fereydoun Ave and New York's Jay Batlle at the concurrent Creek Art Fair. While the West may be suffering from an economic slowdown, critics credit rising oil prices with producing a new cadre of art buyers in Russia and the Middle East.

Monroe's Last Nudes Lohan Redux

MONROE'S LAST NUDES LOHAN REDUX
Looking at the New York Magazine Nude Lohan prints, as an artist who's taken many reference photoshoots, I felt the pictures only told half the story. I needed to see how they compared to the original Marilyn shots and which Marilyn photos were used for reference. Just seeing the Lohan photos didn't give me any perspective.

I painstakingly (it was fun) went through the original Bert Stern / Monroe "the last sitting" shot-by-shot and figured out (to my best guess) which pictures he referenced for the Lohan shoot. (see below)

How Lohan was able to take poses and expressions that are fun and alive in 1962 and make them look so dull and contrived in 2008 is amazing. Probably the one time when a little champagne tumble off the sobriety wagon would have been a good career move. . .

visual mind reading

visual mind reading

brain_scanner.jpg
a new scientific mind-reading technique that is able to to accurately predict images being viewed by people, using quite advanced brain activity scanners (fMRI).

"the study raises the possibility in future of the technology being harnessed to visualize scenes from a person's dreams or memory... to reconstruct a picture of a person's visual experience from measurements of brain activity alone. imagine a general brain-reading device that could reconstruct a picture of a person's visual experience at any moment in time".

first, custom-made software analyzes a subject's visual cortex while they view 1000s of images over 5 hours, to learn how that person's brain codes visual information. then, the decoder is able to predict the brain activity it would expect if the subject is viewing a new set of images.

sounds like a great tool to research how people "visualize" abstract concepts?

there's something about gisele, congrats LeBron

via Fashionologie>> This month, LeBron James becomes the third man ever to star on a Vogue cover, following in the footsteps of George Clooney (June 2000) and Richard Gere (November 1992). The most recent two covers have something even more striking in common . . . Gisele Bundchen appears on both.
Men_on_vogue

Cindy_richard_vogue I guess when you have a formula that works, you stick with it — all three covers pair man with supermodel (Richard Gere appeared with then-girlfriend Cindy Crawford), and all three covers are highlighted with red and white fonts. They appear in eight-year intervals: 1992, 2000, 2008, so if all goes according to the pattern, we may not see another until 2016.

Congrats, Lebron! But I wonder how Anna's favorite Roger Federer feels about this . . .
